A new version of the ZBD-04 infantry fighting vehicle has been spotted in China during transport, drawing attention for adopting an unmanned, remotely operated weapon turret.

The images indicate a significant change compared to the traditional model, which used a manned turret equipped with a 100 mm cannon.

The original ZBD-04, also known as the Type 04 or WZ502, features armament similar to that of the Russian BMP-3, combining a 100 mm cannon with a 30 mm automatic gun. However, this configuration requires the storage of large-caliber ammunition inside the vehicle, which considerably increases the risk of total destruction in the event of a hit by drones, anti-tank weapons, or rockets.

In the new variant, the 100 mm cannon appears to have been removed, making way for an automated turret controlled from inside the hull. This change reduces the amount of explosive material in the crew compartment and eliminates the need for an operator in the turret, increasing survivability in combat scenarios.

If the model is intended for the People’s Liberation Army, the redesign suggests an adaptation to lessons learned from recent conflicts, in which crew protection has become a priority.

The modernization of the ZBD-04 reinforces the global trend toward prioritizing unmanned turrets, combining lower weight, enhanced safety, and firepower compatible with the demands of the modern battlefield.
